Necessity is the mother of invention.
I graduated from the Bachelor of Journalism program at the University of King’s College in May 2009. My timing couldn’t have been worse. As I stepped into the workforce, staff at magazines and newspapers around the continent lost their jobs. CBC canceled the television show I interned on during my 4th year, and many of the journalists at the newspaper where I was an administrator, the people who encouraged me to go to j-school, were laid off.
What’s a girl to do?
I moved to Montreal with my husband within weeks of graduation hoping to ride out the storm. That Fall I left my dead-end office job to intern at This Magazine in Toronto. The staff and freelancers at the magazine were great to work with, and many shared their tips and tricks for freelancing without starving to death.
Toronto is now home, and I freelance as an editor, journalist, content creator and all round grammar geek. Working online allows me to help clients from Sydney, Australia to Princeton, New Jersey, Saskatoon, Canada to London, England.
I’ve met all kind of people and investigated topics I never imagined I’d ever work with. I blog, create web content, write press releases, tweet and manage Facebook groups. I’ve even written a Montreal survival guide for a world relocation company and edited a short novel. I’ve written about topics I love like the environment and music, and found new interests through blogging about economics and yoga.
Journalism that tells a story about people and their motivations is still my first love, but I know that people learn and find information in places we’d never even imagined 10 years ago.
